30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
World Mission Sunday
Propagation of the Faith
October 23, 2011
Brothers and sisters, in today’s Gospel Jesus makes the complex simple, reducing many laws to only two: We are to love God and love our neighbor. Simple, yes, but not easy. And so we come together to pray for what we need to keep these two commandments.
Today is World Mission Sunday. Before the Ascension the Risen Lord said “As the Father sent me, even so I send you.” We accomplish this task by announcing the Gospel of the Lord by the way we live our lives, supporting the missionary work with our monetary support and prayers.

Word of Life
The family on earth is meant to be a mirror of the Trinity, God’s divine “family” in heaven. God intends the family to be our first school of love, holiness and commitment. In the family, we learn who we are – and who God has created us to be. The family is vital in God’s plan for our personal lives.
~ Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles, “We Need to Stand Up for Parents and Families,” July 8, 2011

Open House
Thanks to all who made the Rectory Open House a special celebration!  Ladies of the parish provided publicity, invitations and sweets to draw everyone into the Life Center.  Guides welcomed visitors from McCormick, Abbeville and Greenwood to tour the rectory.  A collection of fall decorations was available for our use, and kitchen helpers included parish men as well as women.  Enjoy your new home, Father.  God bless you.
Father Marreddy would also like to thank the Women’s Club for hosting the open house; and a big thank you to all those who worked on the renovation, decorating, cleaning and provided lunches to the workers.  A special “Thank You” goes to Terry O’Reilly.  Without his vision and leadership this would not have been possible.  The whole parish is very proud of the new rectory and Father Marreddy is very pleased to live there.

Thank You Note
Dear Father Marreddy and Parishioners of Good Shepherd,
We are humbly thankful for the generosity and kindness you have shown to St. Anthony of Padua School through your recent gift of $1,000.  It is a witness to your stewardship and investment of yourself through the resources that God has given you. We appreciate your gift and ask that you keep St. Anthony of Padua School in your prayers as we embark on this monumental task to build a new school.  This is a remarkable testament to the universal church and your decision to follow Jesus.  We would love to give you a tour!
Peace and many continued blessing to you.

31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 30, 2011

My friends, Jesus is patient with every sinner, but in today’s Gospel we hear that there is one sin that seems to try his patience — the sin of hypocrisy. It is an easy sin to fall into, and so let us pray today for the wisdom and the grace to practice what we preach.

Word of Life

A primary task for the pro-life movement is to draw society into deeper reflection about the mystery, wonder and value of human life. We need to promote an alternative to the technological outlook which seeks to control and manipulate birth and death, to reduce nature to “matter”, to elevate having over being, to depersonalize the body and sexuality, and to replace the criterion of personal dignity with the criterion of efficiency, functionality and usefulness.  Our task is to call our brothers and sisters’ hearts and minds to wonder and awe.
~Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, “Ascent or Descent? Wonder or Horror? Mystery of Life Grand Prix Award Address,” January 17, 2008

Oct. 30: Fr. Marreddy's "new" rectory
Abortion clinic Vigil: Many believe praying at an abortion clinic is a dreary, dark experience, when in reality you experience peace and joy. Yes, you are saddened knowing that in that building they are murdering little humans, however, when a mother, going in, sees you quietly praying  and then she returns outside with a decision to let her baby live, there is nothing but elation, joy, and thankfulness.  We stood on a small patch of land between the abortion clinic and the Crisis Pregnancy Center; between life and death.  May God bless all who came to the clinic from our parish to pray last Thursday.
This weekend: Oct. 29/30 Baby Shower for Crossroads Crisis Pregnancy Center in Greenwood.  A baby box is available in the back of church for your baby item donations.  The Center is always in need of diapers, pacifiers and t-shirts, but are always appreciative of any items.  If you forgot your donation this weekend, please bring it next weekend.

Bishop Guglielmone, with the support of the Presbyteral Council, has approved the establishment of a Diocesan Task Force to conduct a study of all parishes, rectories and schools. This is a data and information gathering process, seeking to gain a more comprehensive view of the needs of the Diocese of Charleston, as we direct our attention toward future expansion and planning throughout the state.
If you would like to apply to be a part of this Task Force please stop by the office to pick up a Diocesan Task Force Application/Nomination Form. The areas of expertise that will be beneficial for this study are Accounting & Finance (Banking), Real Estate (sale, acquisition, development, management), Insurance (Property), Stewardship & Development, Education, Canon Law, Investment, Legal.
You are asked to submit this application to the your parish office no later than November 28th. Each Deanery Task Force will begin their study in January 2012, and will submit their findings to Bishop Guglielmone and me shortly after Easter.  We will then present the results of the study to the Presbyteral Council for discussion at our July meeting. Thank you in advance for your support in this endeavor.
~Rev. Msgr. Richard Harris, Vicar General
